The Allagash Brewing Company began as a one-man operation in 1995. Rob Tod had already worked in a brewery setting when he decided to start his own venture. While British and German styles of beer were widely available in the U.S., Belgian styles were difficult to find. Rob Tod travelled to Belgium and saw firsthand the unique traditions of Belgian beer production. He designed a 15-barrel brewhouse and gathered authentic raw materials. Then, he began his quest for producing Belgian style ales.
The brewery offers tours, free tastings, and a history lesson. Tours are offered daily and you’ll learn about the brewery’s history as well as its brewing process. The Allagash Brewing Company is one of the few remaining true breweries in Maine. However, the brewery’s tap list is not complete without experiments. The popular Allagash White is the city’s most popular beer and is now available for delivery curbside.
Allagash Brewing Company has a recycling co-op program. The aim of this program is to encourage sustainable behavior among brewers and liquor stores. Its members are part of the Maine co-op, a group of more than twenty other breweries and liquor stores. In addition to the Allagash Brewing Company, there are twenty other breweries that have joined the program.
